In Touch 85 Newsletter and the Book Club

We're inspired by seeing the alumni of the institution who still have the gratitude to offer back something good and useful to their alma mater. Here goes the story behind this launch:

Few weeks ago, Chitra Mam got a mail from one of the alumnus of '85 batch, sending across this newsletter prepared by him with his team. He requested her to publish it through GCE Chronicles, the college newsletter.  Since it contained missing information about the people who created it, we contacted him and asked for the info. His reply was few forwarded mails from his friends telling not to mention their names as there are chances to miss out the names of few people who indirectly helped in making the Annual Alumni Get-together "In Touch 85", a grand success. How responsible and matured they are!

Here is the download link of "In-Touch 85 Newsletter":
https://www.keepandshare.com/doc/4576202/in-touch-85-newsletter-2-0-meg?dn=y

There was also a pleasant surprise for the Department of English. We got parcels containing inspirational English books from FlipKart. Yes! We later got mails from the same person requesting to initiate a book club through the English Literary Association of the College. Fatafat, the Book Club was inaugurated in the ELA last week and the rules are being formulated. Soon, a catalog of books received will be updated in the college website. Stay connected at:
http://www.gcesalem.edu.in/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57

I'm sure, this act will surely motivate the present students of GCE Salem to have affinity towards the college even after their course of study.

In Touch 85-Pattimandram Fames Mr. S. Raja and Mrs. Barathi Baskar at GCE, Salem

Thunderous claps, roars of laughter, smiling faces  and a atmosphere of happiness, all these happened at an auspicious gathering here at GCE, Salem which housed the talks of Pattimandram Fames Mr. S. Raja and Mrs. Barathi Baskar.

The Chief Guests arrive

“In Touch 85” was the name for the Alumni gathering of the 1981-85 batch of the college. Nearing the Padmashree Muthaiyan Auditorim of the college, one could see a sea of cars flocking the campus getting parked in the vast space available. People, mostly in the “40-plus” age group, stepped out of their cars with their family and children with the same joy as they might have jumped out of their classes at the end of the day. “Even in cinema, there cannot be a hug between a hero and heroine better than the way a few people hugged their old friends here”, said Mrs. Barathi amidst a thunderous applause from the audience and even more hugs. Old friends, old crushes, old professors all dazzled brand new with this get-together featuring a huge turnover from former GCEians.

Just a Casual Click
With the faculty that taught this batch gathered at the same place as the students are, it was quite difficult to differentiate between the two because of their age. Time might have changed their physical appearance but everyone in that place can feel that their hearts were afresh and full of joy when they met their professors who taught them. Before the official function kicked off, many old students took turns in introducing themselves and sharing their feelings. The profiles of those people were certainly impressive. Senior Manager at Caterpillar Inc, CEO for a branch of L&T, Professor at a Foreign  University, people working at Dubai, Abu Dhabi, United Kingdom etc are all a few excerpts from the vast pool of personalities.
Lighting up the lamp

The grand occasion started off by calling the chief guests onto the stage followed by all the professors who taught the batch. The students took turns in honouring those teachers by embracing them with a shawl and presenting mementos.  With some of those professors still in their service, earth shattering applause from the present students became the theme music of such veterans. With the honouring ceremony coming to a halt, there was a presentation by Mr. M. Kamaraj, Senior General Manager, ETA Ascon Star Group, Dubai about the plan for a new Alumni Association Building for which funds are being raised. The proposed project which costs a total of 2.97 Crore Rupees at three stages, impressed everyone in the Audi equally, including the chief guests. His power point presentation also shared us the news that the land for the project has been allocated and approved and that the project can start as the funds keep pouring. He introduced to the crowd, the trustees that have taken up the charge of collecting funds and organizing it amidst claps. The Account No. For collection of funds was provided to all. He also requested to spread this message so that all the students from more than those 40 batches that passed out from the college get to know about this.

This was followed by a short speech from the Head of the Institution who herself is a member of the Alumni-Dr. R. S. D. Wahida Banu. The first lady of GCE quickly highlighted her dreams and wishes about the college and her gratitude towards her professors. Stating that she doesn’t want to eat up the time as the prominent speakers were waiting for their speech, she humbly took her seat amidst beaming smiles from both the guests.

Mr. S. Raja in action
The much awaited speech of Mr. Raja was next. The popular person was a graduate of B. COM from the American College, Madurai and did his Masters in the field of Journalism from Madurai Kamaraj University. As the speaker took his podium, even his posture got a roaring applause from the audience. Once the dust settled, the veteran displayed his oratorical skills to the best, hypnotizing everyone with his sense of humour. Stating that GCE, Salem was only the third Government College in the state that he is visiting, he appreciated the college for its vast campus and infrastructure. He was also saddened at the privatization of education and the business that is going on in the name of running a college. “Increasing the number of Government colleges which offer quality education with minimum fees is the way of change and growth in the field”, he said with the necessary emphasis. He then asked his fellow speaker, Mrs. Barathi Baskar to take over the podium.

Mrs. Barathi was a graduate in Chemical Engineering from AC College of Technology, Chennai. She did her MBA and is presently the Vice President of Citi Bank, Chennai. She started off her speech by welcoming all the dignitaries and acknowledging the fact that they spend their time and money to show their gratitude towards their professors. Quoting her school and college memories as examples, she kindled the emotions of the crowd who moved along with her in the oratorical journey. Thanking the Alumni for imprinting in her the willingness to show gratitude to her professors, she took her seat amidst sounds of joy, claps and emotions.

People having a gala time at the lunch
Mr. S. Raja re-entered the scene to give his final touch to the speech. Taking another 20 minutes time, he went down his memory lane and gave the crowd a success formula. “Behind every success there are a lot of failures, hardships, insults, sweat and blood”, he re-quoted from the previous speech of Mrs. Barathi. Going with his usual unique style of speech, he kept intact an Auditorium which had a tough time housing an overwhelming crowd. His thoughts and words will ricochet in the hearts of all, so will Mrs. Barathi’s.

The program ended with delicious lunch for the hundreds gathered which was followed by meetings between Alumni. This day August the 12th will for sure be a memorable one.

TCS inks MoU with GCE, Salem

Mr. Ashok Seetharam in a brief meeting with the Principal
‘Students should learn the art of working as teams as leadership quality gets groomed while doing group activities like organizing these kind of events,’ Ashok Seetharaman, General Manager, Human Resources, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Limited, Chennai, said here on Thursday, the 26th of July.
The gathering of Final Year students at the Padmashree. Muthaiyan Auditorium
Speaking during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TCS and Government College of Engineering (GCE), Mr. Ashok said that students do extremely well in schools and colleges in highly competitive environment and TCS identifies the skills in newly recruited candidates and motivate them to excel. But their capacity to work as team, which is vital, brings out success in projects, he added.

Of the over 2,000 colleges in the country, TCS visits 250 colleges for campus recruitment and of the 535 colleges in the State, 45 colleges were visited for the same, every year. He also said that a stringent process was followed by the company for partnering institutions, as only 12 MoUs were signed with educational institutions across the country. The MoU would enable TCS to conduct knowledge development programmes for students.
The Principal addressing the gathering

Under the Academic Interface Programme (AIP), GCE received the Collaboration Institute certificate that would explore the possibility of supporting TCS in learning, hiring and carrying out research requirements.

The first women principal of the institution, Dr. R.S.D. Wahida Banu said that students were trained to the industrial needs, as apart from academics, value added courses were conducted for them. She also appealed to students to engage in activities to improve their communication and life skills and accomplish their goals.

MoU being signed
V. Rajkumar, Training and Placement Officer of the college, said that of the total 285 students placed in 2012, 108 students were placed in TCS. Students of various departments spoke about the prospects of working in TCS, the knowledge of which they gained from their seniors.

Coffee with the Principal

The official meeting of the Chronies with the principal was scheduled to take place by 5pm on the 27th of July. A pretty excited team prepared itself to face the dynamic and head person of the institution, Dr. R. S. D. Wahida Banu. We all sat in front of her, staring at the long list of degrees that went behind her long name. It is common news amidst all GCEians that Wahida Banu Ma’m is the first woman principal of the college and one can have no doubts about her charisma and enthusiasm about the development of the college in all spheres.

The head Chronies- Navaneeth, Arpita and the Head of the Department of English, Dr. S. K. Chitra Lakshimi who is also the Editor-in-Chief of GCE Chronicles took the onus of explaining the activities of the newsletter team in the college. The principal listened to the team and also posted a few queries to the team. She assigned a few tasks to us beyond the newsletter and it is clear that the team will have a lot of work to do rather than publishing the newsletter. It was of course a moment of pride for the chronies for the amount of trust and expectation the vibrant personality had in us.

It is quite clear that the responsibilities of the chronies have increased a lot and we will have to work hard to impress the principal and all others. Well over an hour, the meeting ended with final explanations and confirmations about what she expected of us and what the team expected from the institution. The principal assured us that the team would get all the necessary help from the institution and encouraged us to carry out our works with excellence.

The principal’s actions show very well that she is concerned about improving the 46-year old institution with whatever she can using the power in her hands. Many thanks to the support and her brilliance do inspire everyone around her. We are sure to see a lot more of those qualities and hopefully incur some of them.

GCE Chronicles - A step ahead

Wah! I feel, Dr. R.S.D. Wahida Banu, our respected principal has taken the level of GCE Chronicles one step up in the college. Really proud about her. You will know the reason for this feeling when you read the incident which I'm going to narrate. But, before we go, I would like to sprinkle few supporting facts about the incident :

GCE has its Digital Library - Conference hall, with excellent Video Conferencing facility. Last year, our college has been selected as one of the 33 remote centers in India for offering virtual classroom whenever IIT Bombay conducts a workshop in collaboration with ISTE.

Till yesterday, the above fact seemed like just a piece of news that was published in the recent edition of our newsletter even for the chronies. But, this day gave me a wonderful adventure to know about the video conferences that take place in the campus, in detail.

Today being the first day of the two week workshop on "Research methodologies" sponsored by the MHRD held at IIT Bombay, Hon'ble Minister of Human Resource Development - Kapil Sibal inaugurated the workshop through a video link from New Delhi. When it was about to be 10 AM, I got a call from Chitra ma'm saying that the Principal wants a Student Editor from the college newsletter to cover the event. Though the eligible candidates for attending the workshop was PG or Ph.D scholars, I happened to be a part of today's event. I would say, this is the first time in the past three years that a chrony is getting an official invitation to cover an event. If this trend continues, I strongly believe that the GCE Chronicles is going to render many worthy services as the official press of the college, in the forthcoming years. Thank you principal madam, for this opportunity.

I would love to share how the video conferencing works rather than what was the workshop about, which is however going to take place in the next annual edition of GCE Chronicles. IIT Bombay has provided an exclusive Client application for video conferencing for the remote centers. With the high speed internet connection in the digital library, the infrastructure for such a video conferencing is highly possible. The video captured in IIT Bombay venue is called as "Teacher Video" and all the other videos from the remote centers are called as "Student Video". The application used for this also has visual-aid accessories such as "Document" for displaying PPTs, "Whiteboard" for live teaching and other tools such as "Chat" which could be used to send text chats to the moderators at the IIT for getting the doubts clarified. It is also possible for the students in any of the remote centers to interact with the teacher during the "queries session". The teacher could select an institution randomly or specifically. Also, the student could make a request to the teacher to attend his question so that the "student video" is connected to that particular remote center.

This was not an easy job at all, when I gathered information about it in depth. Few staff from the Mechanical CADD department were given the training by IIT Bombay to be the network operators and the video coordinators. Dr. Balusamy from Mechanical Engineering Department and Prof. Govindaraju from Electrical Department are the coordinators of these video conferences that take place in the campus. Principal, being proud of them, appreciated that they are the perfectionists in this.

First step into the New Academic Year

The successful release of the Annual edition 2011, the tense semester exams and the long, hot summer holidays were quite a short break for the newsletter team which me this Friday (15.06.2012). The team’s works went on undisturbed by the gap and it met with rejuvenated vigor. With the third years

The Prolonged Meeting

Yup.! As the title says, today's meeting prolonged till 5.30 pm. There were 3 new chronies in to the team from the Civil Department - Uvashri , Rajapreetha and Divya. We were glad to hear when all these 3 new girls from II year openly admitted that they wished to join the crew voluntarily as they were impressed by our recent release - The Students Edition. The meeting commenced with the self-introduction from the new Chronies.

The color printer for our department has been sanctioned last week and I hope it will be the new pet animal of Chronies, which will be tamed with care ;-) Unfortunately, I could only announce this happy news but couldn't show it to the Chronies as the department was locked earlier today.

This meet was quite different. We spent only few time to discuss about our forthcoming Annual Edition 2011. The information to be published are being collected by the Student Correspondents. Hence, its left to them in a hope that they know their own responsibilities.

But then, you may wonder why this meeting was such a long one. There is a reason. Almost all of the members present there shared some news about the college:
  • First of all it was me to start the college gossip. I volunteered myself as an invigilator for AMCAT (Aspiring Minds Computer Adaptive Test) held on 19th and 22nd August for Final Years. Hence, I shared my experience about it and discussed few etiquette to be followed when one undertakes an Online Test like it.

  • Lucky from II yr ECE shared how the inauguration of their department association happened. It was about Society for Advancement of Electronics and Communication Engineers (SAECE).

  • Abhijeeth, an enthusiastic artist from III yr Mett explained us why the first ever inauguration of Arts and Photography club of GCE is still being delayed.

  • The Tamil Literary Association's active member in our team - Anand, III yr Mett, updated us about few happenings in the weekly meetings there. He also told us about the preparations going on for inauguration of SFAME (Society For Advancement of Metallurgical Engineers)

  • Sathya Narayanan, the III yr CSE geek informed us how the Decade Anniversary of the department - Revive 11.0 was organized by their final years.

  • Surendiran, II yr Civil spoke about certain Anti - Ragging issues going on in the campus.
With that we called off the day. Next Wednesday, being Ramzan holiday, we won't have our weekly meeting. Hence, next update after Sep 7.

The Decade Anniversary of CSE dept - Revive 11.0

As a mark of the completion of a decade since the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was started in GCE(2001-2011), the final year students of the department conducted an intra-department symposium, Revive 11.0 after the inauguration function of the Society for Advancement of Computer Science Engineers (SACSE) yesterday(04 July, 2011). Dr. S. K. Chitra Lakshimi, Asst. Professor / English Department was the Chief Guest and she released the decade magazine.

It was a competition between the second and third years. The final years had organized them with several events like Paper Presentation, Animation, Quiz, Code Debugging, Treasure Hunt, Marketing and Gaming which made this function a grand success.

Highlights this week

There were many highlights in yesterday’s meeting. First of all, we had a new comer to the editorial team. It was H. Sathya Narayanan of III year CSE. It is to be noted that the poster for advertising our GCE Chronicles Students Edition 1 within college was voluntarily designed and submitted to the team by our new Chrony which made Chitra ma’m herself took in such a selfless person to the team.

It was a great disappointment for ma’m when she came to know R. R. Prasanth of II yr Mechanical has received his transfer order to Govt. College of Technology, Coimbatore. He is the second Chrony to get transferred from our college, Arun Ravindran, a former student of ECE dept., 2009-2013 batch, being the first one to get transferred to the same institution.

It was pleasant to hear from ma’m that about fifteen II year students were voluntary to be a part of the newsletter team. Hence, their proposal is under consideration. She also happily informed us that the sanction letter from the principal, for the ‘Department Colour Printer’ is under rapid progress. At once we are provided with printer, we will start to print our own hard copy versions of both the editions of our newsletters launched till now.

After I shared some of my memories and technical aspects related with the earlier publications as I promised, I informed them about a new activity which is going to be carried out in our GCE Newsletter blog. It is nothing but the newly enabled page in this blog called “GCE Chronicles’ Timeline”. My idea is to update that page with the link whenever our Chief Editor, Dr. S. K. Chitra Lakshimi posts an info about our newsletter in her blog – www.smilewithchitra.blogspot.com. This idea was accepted by mam and even all the other chronies felt that it would also be a reference for the earlier updates about the newsletter from the day since the idea to bring out a newsletter for our college was proposed.

The layout for the Annual Edition 2011 is to be prepared soon and our first deadline to compile the reports about various departments would be September 28th, again a Wednesday. We won’t be meeting next Wednesday as it is a local holiday for Salem declared by the district collector due to the annual “Tiruvizha” festival of Kottai Mariamman Kovil at Old Bus Stand. Hence, we called it a day after fixing our next meeting date as August 24th.

Back to work after a week's enjoyment...

It was a regular Wednesday meeting yesterday.! We are glad to announce you that the total downloads of the Students Edition - 1 till date was 423(just in a week). We also noticed that about 50 more downloads were also there for the GCE Chronicles Vol. I after the recent launch. Though all the chronies were longing for this post-achievement meeting, it was not that cool yesterday. Well, the first reason would be the absence of our beloved Chitra Mam. The Industrial Visit of the III yr ECE and Metallurgy students was the next reason. II yrs should be appreciated for their presence as they didn't tell out their 'Series test' as a reason. (:p)

As the official hub of the Editorial Bureau - The English Department was not available to hold the meeting, we Chronies moved to the Lecture Hall -1 in the Admin Block.

I was asked to take over the meeting by the Student Editor - Uday anna(Well, a good supervision was there from his part!). I explained the Chronies, the way the next edition will look as it was planned to be 'The Annual Edition for 2011'.

First of all, a list of the events that happened and that are going to happen in the college in 2011 was prepared. Then, all the chronies were instructed to start collecting the reports about the symposiums, workshops, farewells, Industrial Visits, placement statistics and the list of students and staff who won(or participated) in Paper Presentations and National & International level conferences for their own departments. They were also told to acquire reports from various extra-curricular activities like NCC, NSS, Rotaract and Leo Clubs, Alumni Association, etc. Finally myself and Arpita split the total work among all the chronies and informed them.

Soon, the call for the submissions of the name list of the participants of conferences and paper presentations will be published in this blog(Keep checking, "Contributors, attention!" page). Those who missed to contribute in the Students Edition are kindly requested to make use of this opportunity.

The Day has come...

Ha!

July 20, 2011. The most longed day for the Chronies and the other GCE ians. After the decision of parting, Chronies were really expecting the first ever issue of the colorful Students Edition of GCE Chronicles Volume II. Though the chronies worked hard from the morning to release it this day as a Facebook event that was formerly created, would be like a promise to the world, they never gave up their fun; they pulled up each others legs with a bang of laughter, besides concentrating on the work. We missed the Mechanical II years who were on their Industrial Visit to Coimbatore.

When waiting in the lounge
In the Eng dpt
The compilation of 40 colorful pages of the e-book was over by 5.30 pm. However, we had a leisure time of about 40 minutes as the appointment with the principal was by 6. Should we necessarily explain how naughty the chronies would have been when waiting at the lounge outside the Principal's room?

Principal e-Launches....
We were invited in to the Principal's cabin at almost the time of given appointment. While Kirthika(IV yr Civil) distributed chocolates to the Principal and the other chronies as a sign of sweet start, Uday Krishnan(being the student of final year Mech), one of the Student Editors gave an introduction to all the other Chronies to the Principal Dr. P. K. Jayadev (HOD of the Mechanical Department). Hope the students would have never ever imagined to have an interaction with such a cool Principal. By around 6.30 pm, the Principal e-launched the GCE Chronicles Vol. II, Issue. I (Students Edition) as Dr. S. K. Chitra Lakshimi(Chief Editor/ Asst. Professor of English Departement) assisted him.  As Jinu Alex (IV yr EEE, the other Student Editor) and Prasanth(IV yr Mett) were buzy freezing the photographs, all the other chronies cherished the e-launch by clapping aloud.

Principal interacting with Chronies...
After a hearty congratulation, the Principal inquired Dr. S. K. Chitra Lakshimi and Uday Krishnan if the Newsletter Team is in need of any resources. Proposals have been made and few of them were accepted. We know you are eager to know what they are; but, don't worry. It will be announced in this blog at once it is signed officially. Thus he made our day.

Thanks to the principal Dr. P. K. Jayadev.

Regards,
The Chronies
